The zac team's Candler Park neighborhood, Lake Claire neighborhood, Kirkwood neighborhood and East Lake neighborhood

Along with Inman Park, these three neighborhoods grew along the east-west trolley line as Atlanta's first suburbs.  Not just for urban homesteaders anymore, these neighborhoods share many traits in common: strong, active neighborhood associations (see links on left), mature parkland, "walkability" and an interesting mix of houses.  We find it fascinating.  After all, what other neighborhoods can boast of an emu as a local character (see below)?

Candler Park neighborhood:   Originally the city of Edgewood, established 1890, its citizens voted in 1908 to become part of Atlanta.  The map above covers the Candler Park area , bounded by Clifton Road on the east, DeKalb Avenue (where the Georgia Railroad tracks are) on the South, Moreland Avenue (the eastern boundary of Inman Park) on the west, and North Avenue on the north.

Home to around 7000 wildly diverse people, it has more the feel of a small town than that of a neighborhood in a major metropolitan area.  Like all the neighborhoods in and around Atlanta, it declined as a desirable place to live after the 1920's but began its upswing in the late 1960's.

Want to play nine rounds of golf?  Got $7?  That's how much the Candler Park Golf Course charges for the day.  Or how about going to the opposite end of the cultural spectrum for a tattoo?  Also available in Candler Park, not far from the golf course.  Not counting the restaurants along Moreland Avenue, the famous and fabulous Flying Biscuit bakery and cafe and Fellini's pizza on McLendon and Radial on DeKalb Avenue are a few to start with.

Courtesy of the Candler Park Neighborhood Association, here are some photos by Warren Jackson that capture some of the spirit of the neighborhood (click here or on photo at right.)
Lake Claire neighborhood: Several years ago, there was a momentary plague of bumper stickers urging us to "Ski Lake Claire!"   While there may indeed be a  4.7 acre Lake Claire Park (the green area on McLendon Ave on the map), there is, alas,  NO Lake Claire.   However, there is, in fact, a Lake Claire neighborhood starting east of Candler Park and also bounded on the South by the Georgia Southern Railroad tracks and DeKalb Avenue.  On the East is the city of Decatur, and on the North, well, it gets too complicated and there may not be any official boundaries, anyway.  Just know that the Druid Hills neighborhood claims the parks south of Ponce de Leon Avenue, so Lake Claire goes no further north than them.
The "Lake" in Lake Claire refers to Lakeshore Drive, which in turn refers to an artificial "Lake Ponceana" which is now dry.  Lake Claire comprises several separate developments which became incorporated into Atlanta (but DeKalb County) starting in 1910.
Around 1200 homes range in  type from craftsman to bungalow, 50's cottages, exotics and modern, mirroring the eclectic mix of residents.  Lake Claire sits atop the Eastern Continental Divide, meaning that all water in it flows into the Gulf of Mexico.  A little further east and rivers flow to the Atlantic.

During the 1980's a group of homeowners in Lake Claire banded together to purchase ~7 acres of land.  This became the Lake Claire Community Land Trust which, while private land, is available for use by the neighborhood and to well-behaved others. Features include a covered stage, picnic area, fire pit/drum circle, and the "emu, goat, and chicken overlook".   (The emu's name is Mr. Big).

Kirkwood neighborhood:   We are now south of Dekalb Avenue/Georgia Southern Railroad.  Bordered on the west by Rogers St, on the south by Memorial Drive, and on the east by Melrich and Winter Avenues, Kirkwood is still part of Atlanta and Dekalb County.  Born on the streetcar line, it continued to rely on this transportation mode until as late as the 1950's.  It was incorporated as a municipality in 1899 and was annexed into Atlanta in 1922.

One building from Kirkwood's early days, the Kirkwood School, is now part of the Kirkwood Loft apartments, renovated in 1997.  Middle-class urban homesteaders began to renovate the neighborhood's stock of historic housing in the 1980's.   Howard Street. between Howard and College Avenues boasts the finest and largest houses of the community, featuring Queen Anne, Arts and Crafts, and Victorian Folk styles.

Pricing has kept pace with the renewed appreciation of the neighborhood's value.  In addition Kirkwood is also home to Bessie Branham Park, a hard-working park that comprises baseball/softball, basketball, tennis, playgrounds, and a large community center which houses, among other amenities, a Community Cyber Center.

East Lake Neighborhood:  New homes commingle with older bungalows and Tudor cottages in this most Eastern of Atlanta's neighborhoods.   Bounded by Pharr Road and other streets (the Oakwood and Kirkwood communities) on the North; 1st, 2nd, and Meadowlake Drive on the West; and the city limits of Atlanta on the East (Candler Rd) and South (Glenwood Avenue), this small neighborhood is dominated, in both geography and history, by the famed East Lake Golf Club.

Forever associated with the legendary golfer Bobby Jones, the Atlanta Athletic Club purchased land in 1904 on the site of an old amusement park and opened the golf course in 1908.   The courses were enhanced and improved throughout the decades.

However, starting in the '60's, white flight erupted here as in other Atlanta neighborhoods.  The Atlanta Athletic Club pulled up stakes and followed its members to its present home in Duluth.   An unyielding group of members purchased the original course and clubhouse in 1968 and began operating them as the East Lake Country Club.

Things continued to worsen until 1993, when a local foundation bought the club, intending to restore it as a tribute to Bobby Jones and others.  This became a catalyst for renewing the whole community.  For example, all profits from the club support the East Lake Community Foundation.  Among its accomplishments is the replacement of a notorious housing project  with the Villages of East Lake, which surrounds the public Charlie Yates Golf CourseEast Lake Commons is another award-winning housing initiative just South of the neighborhood.

In addition to the Golf Club association, this neighborhood does have its own civic association, the East Lake Neighbors Community Association (ELNCA)
